I feel like when you are I feel like when I would get so amped up, it wasn't like the cameras were even a I thought it was just I was so upset and so scared and afraid of what this outcome was going to look like, that in those moments, I was just going to express myself regardless. We Q We deserve these things. Right? You really pulled a fast one on me. She published a memoir the following year titled Hiding from Reality. She gave talks about domestic abuse around the country. And so the two of them walked up when I was in the chair because there was a pause. Taylor: I would love it if you wouldnt call my company little. )And then, finally, just to remember youre not alone. Julia: The dad is like a gray haired guy in a black T-shirt with the sleeves cut off. Q I dont know if everybody, you know, has experiences like that, but its awesome to hear you talk about it not just in a logistical sense, but also an emotional sense. And that, for me personally, I want to be able to figure out all the ways that I can continue to be involved and get better and be more active. Amory: Taylor stepped back from filming "Real Housewives." Q Oh my THE VICE PRESIDENT: It is so good. THE VICE PRESIDENT: Thank you. Amory: We typically dont go looking for the backstory of a meme before putting our own spin on it, right? Take care, guys. 
A tax cut.Q Wow. And a lot of the captions Taylor saw were surprisingly clever. I don't know what I would do if I were having a meme. Wendy: How did you feel watching that back? We did it. (Applause.) And it appraised for much higher. Kenyatta Cheese co-founded the site Know Your Meme, and Don Caldwell is Editor in Chief. How do you feel, you know?THE VICE PRESIDENT: This is a serious matter. Isn't it a real housewife? But imagine that the facts are: The majority of women who get an abortion the majority are mothers. So there was really nothing more. Ben: And she wont be the last. And we must remember, we are always going to have to fight to maintain these rights. And it still pops out now. But then now theres all this delayed response to what weve experienced, you know, these four years prior. I can't sweep it under the rug. Yes, that is right.
And he was like, Im going to walk a little bit more and cool down. And so, he started to walk. In our minds, we think its like, Okay, something comes in, and youre like, This is what were going to do. You know, but how is it really on a day to day? But from whom? But humor isnt always there at the beginning. If I were sitting in the passenger seat or if we were outside of the car, he might grab my one side of my hair and then hit my head against the outside of the car. And she thought she was doing so in confidence. THE VICE PRESIDENT: We have taught we have dealt with the fact that there is racial bias in the healthcare delivery system. Speak about that in a way that you can energize the people in your life to understand that when elections come up, I know Keke, and she has passionately told me how this concerns her and how my vote could impact the outcome of this decision.Q Thank you so much for that. Ben: Were coming to you from WBUR, Bostons NPR station. And I think we all know how that turned out. And so, often when I arrive at the West Wing, Ill walk down to the Oval Office and the President and I will have a meeting with the heads of our intelligence community including, often the Secretary of Defense will be there, the Secretary of State will be there, the Director of the CIA will be there and we will talk about the threats to our nation and the priorities that we face. Q Yeah. The showis in the middle of a series all about internet memes, and they recently featured the woman at the center of the popular "Woman Yelling at a Cat" meme, Taylor Armstrong from the original cast ofThe Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. It was a tumultuous time. (Applause.) Yes. The impact that it is going to have on women without means, what it will mean for, you know, somebody who has financial means, this is really probably not going to have much of an effect on them. He hit her across the face, hard. so that grandmother or that auntie or that mother or that father. I think, you know, sometimes in public policy, I think folks think because theyre small people, its a small issue. None of us would be sitting here if we didnt figure that out at some point.
I think a lot of my peers and I we often talk about it. What are we now then what can what can our move be?THE VICE PRESIDENT: Right. Similar to what were talking about in terms of voting, where they are taking the rights of people to be able to express their voice in a democracy through their vote. I don't get it either. I want to take it back to something that we talked about also in D.C., where you know, I knew that you were from the Bay, but what was interesting to learn was that you grew up around a lot of Civil Rights leaders because of your parents involvement with the Civil Rights Movement. Taylor: and I asked her to meet me for lunch and I wanted to get some insight from her as to what it was like to get in a custody battle and to get divorced with someone who had so much more economical advantages. What would you say to prepare yourself for this role?THE VICE PRESIDENT: Well, first of all, dont hear no. (Laughs.) I've just seen I feel like thousands of them. But that that was a whole different lifetime for me. Ben: And Taylor, in particular, had a big something she was trying to keep under wraps, from the other women on the show and its millions of viewers. Hes down the hall or down the pathway, and hes got his earbuds in. You know, what does you know what I mean? So lets work on the coalition also, which is bringing folks together, because there is power in those numbers. Dont forget, Dr. King was a very young man. Because I dont want to be that person that just looks at my government and says, Oh, what are you doing? Yes, theres accountability that needs to be had, but I want accountability for myself as well. And then he came up. We also know that weve had a history in this country of government Q Exactly.THE VICE PRESIDENT: trying to claim ownership over human bodies.Q Exactly! Which well get to. THE VICE PRESIDENT: Thank you, Keke.Q And thank you for your time. I mean, theres so many things. Amory: You're not alone. Because we dont say that he hits you. Julia: So the dad yells, You can't use the microplane for cheese, the son says, yes, I can. The dad yells, It is for citrus zest and spices only. The son throws the chair. And as glad as we were to hear this, we were surprised. And one of his friends, his comment on it was, this is so romantic. And I thought, yeah, that was the intention.
Q Hilarious. So, choose especially to the young leaders, Id say, but to all of us have every generation choose who is in your life based on loving yourself and requiring that from other people. THE VICE PRESIDENT: And we had supposedly evolved from that time and that way of thinking. Amory: Fascinating Not devastating, even though the internet is collectively laughing at her pain albeit, mostly unknowingly. Her orbital floor, the bone structure under her right eye, was fractured. (Applause. Youre President of the America. I mean, thats just my favorite clip. And the answers will make you never look at the meme the same way again. (Applause. Taylor: So that particular day, I was getting ready to go to a charity event and my stepsons were visiting and I had made them I ordered them a pizza and we were going to he was just going to come home. Amory: Is it OK for me to have a laugh at this or should I be? Ben: Ok. And I went to the residence where he was staying and the gate was closed, but his car was there. Mostly out of fear that it would somehow backfire and have a negative impact on her 5-year-old daughter, Kennedy. I didnt get to say it then, but, you know, Ive been memed a couple of times. (Applause.) And so we have to multitask, looking at what we need to do domestically, what we need to do to bring down the cost of gas Q Oh!THE VICE PRESIDENT: Right? Whooo! And Ben, since you watch it--, Amory: Oh yes Im sorry, since your wife watches the show and youve kept her company for an episode or two why dont you do the honors. As long as we believe in the same things, we can get to the common goal. Taylor: So when did you first see this meme and what was your immediate reaction? Amory: Its not every day Ben and I get to talk to a reality TV star. You know, kiiiinda like what we do all day, Amory, right? Speaking about the Senate and things youve done: One of the most important jobs you did in the Senate was holding Trump officials and nominees accountable as a member of the Judicidary [sic] Judiciary Committee. Humor is a key ingredient of any unit of culture that morphs and spreads over time. You need to do.You know, and theres a quote that Ive always loved from Mother Teresa, where she says, There can be no great things done, only small things with great love. Right? Amory: Well, correct or not, there were some results from this meme that Julia made.
Shes going to have to Q Unacceptable.THE VICE PRESIDENT: figure out what to do with her kids and the cost of the childcare at least for overnight, not to mention bus fare or train fare or airfare and a hotel room. So if she has to leave her state to go for the reproductive healthcare she needs were looking at the fact that if she works, which she probably does, shes going to lose time from work, potentially without leave without paid leave. Or better yet, record a voice memo and email it to endlessthread@wbur.org. And then the son throws a chair and then the dad continues to yell, pointing. Julia: It was a good representation of how we communicate about things that we disagree about, I think. (Applause.) But you are a part of my favorite meme with, We did it, Joe. (Laughter.) Amory: Fast-forward to the filming of an episode that ended up being called Tempest in a Tea Party. Taylor had been emotionally unravelling over the course of the season, but at a tearful, truth-slinging tea party at Lisa Vanderpumps house, Camille confronted Taylor in front of the other women about the abuse that seemed to be bubbling up to the surface more and more, and she even questioned the abuse. I won't be working.
And I got a text. And he said, "If you ever feed my children a pizza without a vegetable again, I'll kill you.". But it wouldnt go down in internet history until years later.
Or if they do recognize Taylor or the show the image is from, the context has been lost to time. Ben: Russell wouldnt let Taylor call for help that night. Right? So, first, Ill say this: You know, I did an analysis trying to look at the states that are attacking a womans right to choose and the states that are attacking voting rights, and there is an interesting intersection.
Ben: This episode of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, known as Malibu Beach Party from Hell, would get PLENTY of tabloid attention in the days after it aired. Join our email list! You know, we talk about eight years or however so ago when we had Obama in office, and we see that things are somewhat different. I want to know what I can do. Maybe would I let the cat yell at me for a change. So there is that piece of it. Taylor: I think my meme is a little unusual based on some of the other memes that are out there, because that was such a terrifying moment I had one friend stopped me in a restaurant one day and he said, I feel so bad. And so what that will mean for you and for your children and your grandchildren. Amory: But later that night, on her birthday, in yet another jealous rage, Taylor says Russell punched her in the eye. But Taylors attempts to hide the abuse werent working, because the show was supposed to capture her real life. Amory: unless it's the Real Housewife Sivertson edition? Memes are so powerful because they get at reality in this way. (Laughs.) Why not turn this one into a spat with a cat? And one of the ways that we wont is to bring everyone together and remember that there is a community of people that is invested in this. There are a lot theres a lot of decisions to be made. And I really appreciate and respect and admire that.

Five years later and a full EIGHT years after the infamous Malibu Beach Party from Hell episode of "Real Housewives" through the weird, mysterious forces of the internet Taylor found herself in another yelling match. (Applause.) You know what Im saying, Adrienne. Ben: Love this meme, great meme. Taylor: So one of the most traumatic experiences is that we get the episodes in advance because we blog on Bravo Dotcom and so we have to watch them in advance so that we can tell our side of a story or blog about the events that occur. And what is she yelling about? (Applause.) The friend behind her is gripping her just under her outstretched arm. Amory: Fortunately for Julia, this quote-unquote real, reality TV scenario on American Chopper had relatively low stakes, and its even thought to have been staged or planned to some extent. Q Yeah.THE VICE PRESIDENT: So Q Women are good at that. Other times, it was an exhausting barrage of verbal attacks as Russell spiraled out of control. This episode was edited by Maureen McMurray. And I got a chance to sit and talk with her and really, you know, kind of get to know her in a really casual way, which I feel really lucky to have gotten that chance. But I don't want people to feel guilty about it. And but I think some people who've come to the realization that that was such a traumatic time in my life, they feel a little guilty about laughing about it. We were going to leave right away. You know what Im saying? But I think the second point she was making is: Because it is the nature of it that you have to be vigilant dont be overwhelmed.Q Right.THE VICE PRESIDENT: Dont be dont be overwhelmed to the point that we are disheartened and we think that we cant do anything about it.
Ben: And Ben Brock Johnson. Doug! Im trying to find my husband. Sarah Laiola teaches about digital culture and design at Coastal Carolina University. No. And so that meme is from my husband standing there videotaping me having the call with the President. Except, maybe like with fewer parties. Q Yeah.THE VICE PRESIDENT: And it requires all of us to speak up, to speak out, and to be active. Dont do that. This is dangerous. But for the one we now know as Woman Yelling at a Cat, maybe we all should have. And have faith in whatever it is you believe in, that that you were destined to do great things, even when the obstacles are there. Taylor: We just need to take some time out to have fun together. It was a Monday, and Taylor was supposed to have a meeting with Russell at this office to talk about the divorce which hadnt been finalized at this point and about custody of their daughter. Amory: While it was happening, though, the physical scars were actually the easier ones for Taylor to conceal from her Real Housewives cast-mates. )Q I seen a meme the other day that said, Me Googling online, How to make gas at home. Okay?THE VICE PRESIDENT: Oh, dont do that. Including a birthday card saying that he knew he hadnt been a good husband, but he wanted to be. Taylor: That's a good question.
