When I saw them, I was like Holy shot. So I never thought about it. John Pazdan Ricks stage banter often consisted of teasing Robin and introducing their soundman as Les Manly. They had a hard-core following, and I would see many of the same faces. Nielsen and Petersson continued working together in several formats until they teamed with drummer Bun E. Carlos and vocalist Robin Zander to form the definitive lineup of Cheap Trick in 1975. We had the basic structure for it and it's just kind of evolved. Carlos's appearance suggested seedy, smoke-filled jazz halls, while Nielsen exuded an air of fun-loving geekiness. Both had long blond hair and an androgynous look, but Robin was much prettier and had a better voice. There really wasnt anything in downtown Chicago, and it seemed like people were just opening up clubs left and right out in Downers Grove and Stone Park and Schaumburg. It backed away from the harder-rocking side of Cheap Trick, featuring slicker production and quieter arrangements that spotlighted the band's melodic skills instead. Robin Zander That was the end of the Carnival Game. Carlos, Petersson, and Nielsen formed Cheap Trick in 1973 with lead singer Randy Xeno Hogan, who would leave the band shortly thereafter. Rick just took off like a shotgun with the songwriting after we got the band together. The lone change has been the departure of drummer Bun E. Carlos, who quit touring with the band in 2010.

Petersson rejoined the band in 1988 and the group began work on a new record with the help of several professional songwriters. Early in 1997, the group released a Steve Albini-produced single on Sub Pop, which was followed by the eponymous Cheap Trick, their acclaimed debut for Red Ant, in the spring.
