In August, the lake is loaded with anglers coming to take advantage of its abundant populations of sockeye salmon, the most flavorful Pacific salmon, according to Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. The lake is planted with about 100,000 young kokanee in the summer, and these landlocked sockeye salmon reach catchable sizes for future seasons and are typically the main attraction here. This 50-acre lake is among a small handful of lakes with a unique cold-weather fishing season, opening the day after Thanksgiving through the end of March. The white sturgeon fishery is still open on Lake Roosevelt, the Columbia River reservoir off Grand Coulee Dam. Liberty Lake is about 15 minutes southeast of Spokane Valley. Internal combustion engines are prohibited, which makes this lake a nice quiet destination offering decent trout fishing. The lake also is stocked with good numbers of young cutthroat trout and smaller numbers of young tiger trout, both of which can grow to good sizes in a season or two. West Medical Lake, which is a bit larger at about 200 acres, is more heavily stocked and has good boat access at the WDFW access at the southern end. Hog Canyon Lake, also known more simply as Hog Lake, is well stocked with young rainbow trout in spring, and they grow without angling pressure until the holidays. It is located just a few miles from the lodge outside of Winthrop. Stocked with hatchery trout in mid-March, Liberty Lake now participates in the state-wide traditional season "opener" on the last Saturday in April, when anglers all over Washington populate its many fisheries to celebrate the start of warm-season fishing (although the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife suggests that early season trout fishing success is likely from late March to early April). Troploids to 30 inches are cruising this pond, and some of the prettiest brookies you will see in North Central Washington. They are all managed to limit the number of anglers allowed a day, and how often anglers are even allowed to fish. The event runs until August 19 and will be featured at the American Fisheries Society annual meeting as a way to illustrate how competitive fishing events can play a meaningful role in fisheries science. This seasonal lake is open from late April through September, and the cooler months will have the best prospects. There is limited shoreline access.
