Its decent size at over 200 acres and well stocked with young cutthroat, rainbows and kokanee that grow to catchable sizes here. In August, the lake is loaded with anglers coming to take advantage of its abundant populations of sockeye salmon, the most flavorful Pacific salmon, according to Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. The lake is planted with about 100,000 young kokanee in the summer, and these landlocked sockeye salmon reach catchable sizes for future seasons and are typically the main attraction here. This 50-acre lake is among a small handful of lakes with a unique cold-weather fishing season, opening the day after Thanksgiving through the end of March. These lakes are quite various. This Blackstone rainbow barely fit into my net. Part of the Columbia River Basin, Moses Lake stretches along the course of Crab Creek, a tributary of the Columbia. Bear Lake is part of Bear Lake Regional Park along Highway 2, a little more than 30 minutes north of Spokane. There are two docks to fish from in Fish Lake County Park and ample room along the east side for shoreline anglers. Be sure to call early in the season to establish availability. The white sturgeon fishery is still open on Lake Roosevelt, the Columbia River reservoir off Grand Coulee Dam. Liberty Lake is about 15 minutes southeast of Spokane Valley. Eloika has a resort with a boat launch and a WDFW access south of Grays Landing. Internal combustion engines are prohibited, which makes this lake a nice quiet destination offering decent trout fishing. The lake also is stocked with good numbers of young cutthroat trout and smaller numbers of young tiger trout, both of which can grow to good sizes in a season or two. West Medical Lake, which is a bit larger at about 200 acres, is more heavily stocked and has good boat access at the WDFW access at the southern end. Hog Canyon Lake, also known more simply as Hog Lake, is well stocked with young rainbow trout in spring, and they grow without angling pressure until the holidays. It is located just a few miles from the lodge outside of Winthrop. Stocked with hatchery trout in mid-March, Liberty Lake now participates in the state-wide traditional season "opener" on the last Saturday in April, when anglers all over Washington populate its many fisheries to celebrate the start of warm-season fishing (although the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife suggests that early season trout fishing success is likely from late March to early April). Troploids to 30 inches are cruising this pond, and some of the prettiest brookies you will see in North Central Washington. They are all managed to limit the number of anglers allowed a day, and how often anglers are even allowed to fish. The event runs until August 19 and will be featured at the American Fisheries Society annual meeting as a way to illustrate how competitive fishing events can play a meaningful role in fisheries science. This seasonal lake is open from late April through September, and the cooler months will have the best prospects. There is limited shoreline access. Clear Lake is over 300 acres and is definitely a go-to spot in this region for catching lots of fish. Some more scenic than others. Horseshoe Lake is almost 70 somewhat marshy acres, with moderate fisheries for trout and warmwater fish. The largemouths get the most press here, as the lake puts out 4- to 6-pounders on a fairly regular basis. Isaacs: Anyone who has inquired about these kinds of lakes would know about Isaacs. Report bat observations: Have you seen a bat flying during the day or in freezing weather? The potential for avian influenza viruses to spread to people is fairly slim but it is best to take precautions and thoroughly wash your hands after handling bird carcasses or bird feeders or baths. I had a chance to visit several of these lakes in Eastern Washington this past season, and if you have ever had the desire to give one a try, this is what is available. Chapman Lake has somewhat limited bank access and a boat will serve you best for reaching more fish. Boaters have the upper hand here as shoreline access is somewhat limited to the WDFW access on the north end of the lake and at a Spokane County park located on the southeast corner of the lake. If you are visiting a water access area or other public facility, please have a bag handy for collecting trash, make sure your cargo or items in the backs of pickup trucks are secured, and help pick up trash if you see it. Walker Lake: This is another of these that offers beautiful scenery, lots of wildlife, including a pair of nesting bald eagles, and something the others donta large lodge right beside the lake. Both Medical and West Medical Lakes are stocked with rainbow and brown trout and offer seasonal fishing opportunities.
With over 1,000 lakes containing bass statewide, and some outstanding river fishing opportunities as well, both smallmouth and largemouth bass are plentiful in eastern Washington waters. Downs Lake is a good-sized but shallow lake of more than 400 acres that is moderately stocked with young rainbow trout. By volume, rainbow trout are stocked in the highest numbers and ranging in size from tens of thousands of baby trout to more modest numbers of keepers and larger fish. I should also mention that most all of these lakes serve a list of clients that return year after year, and available dates can be scarce. Pend Oreille County: to the north, accessible to accessible and remote lakes with big trout and several other types of fishing in the far northeastern corner of Washington. Covering more than 2,445 acres in Wenatchee National Forest, Lake Wenatchee is a natural glacier and snow-melt fed lake in the eastern slopes of the Cascade Mountains. The largest lake and man-made reservoir in Washington covering more than 80,000 acres, Lake Roosevelt stretches from the Canadian border to the Grand Coulee Dam, covering five Washington counties, including Ferry, Lincoln, Okanogan, Stevens, and Grant. Andrews Lake: This is a new lake operated by Dick Caryl at Cascade Outfitters in Omak. While this is a first in Washington, mammals in other states have contracted the virus and WDFW veterinarians do not expect this development to have a major impact on wildlife populations. Many species leave their young while they forage nearby, to avoid attracting carnivores to their young with their scent.
